We are pleased to announce a 5-day workshop on “Health Technology Assessment: Roles, Methods and Challenges“.
This 5-day workshop from 13-14 July and 14-15 & 19 August, 2025 in Hong Kong is offered by the Centre for Health Systems and Policy Research at the JC School of Public Health and Primary Care, Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
The workshop is divided into two parts:
Part 1 (Day 1 – 2) will provide an overview of Health Technology Assessment (HTA). including the basic concepts, development, methodologies, and real-world applications in healthcare systems on Sunday and Monday, 13-14 July, 2025.
Part 2 (Day 3 – 5) will focus on applied learning through interactive sessions on Thursday and Friday 14-15 August & Tuesday 19 August, 2025. Participants will engage in hands-on exercises to generate economic analyses, interpret data outputs, and participate in discussion forum with guest discussants to deepen their understanding of HTA implementation.
Background
Health Technology Assessment (HTA) originated in the 1970s and has since gained recognition for its role in evidence-based decisions regarding new and innovative healthcare technologies including drugs and devices. HTA is a crucial, multidisciplinary process that evaluates the benefits, efficacy, clinical and technical safety and cost-effectiveness of health interventions, informing decision-making to promote an equitable, efficient, and high-quality health system.
Objectives
The workshop will:
- Describe the role of Health Technology Assessment (HTA) in policy and healthcare funding decisions at the global level, with a focus on Mainland China and Hong Kong SAR;
- Explore the key concepts, principles and methodological approaches used in conducting HTA studies;
- Apply economic evaluation methods (including decision tree, Markov model and microsimulation) to assess the cost-effectiveness of health interventions;
- Interpret, present, and apply economic evaluation results for health policy decision-making; and
- Analyze the potential challenges, policy considerations and contextual factors influencing the implementation of HTA in Mainland China and Hong Kong SAR.
Target Audience
This workshop is intended for researchers, professionals and stakeholders involved in the development, evaluation, and implementation of health technologies and policies, including but not limited to:
- Policy makers and advisors at national and regional levels involved in healthcare planning and resource allocation
- Health economists, analysts, and researchers working in health systems, services, and policy
- Healthcare administrators and managers in the public and private sectors
- Professionals from pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies, particularly those involved in market access, health economics and outcomes research (HEOR), regulatory affairs, pricing and reimbursement
- Academics and postgraduate students in public health, health policy, and health economics
- Representatives from health insurance organizations, regulatory bodies, and non-governmental organizations
- Development partners and international agencies supporting health system strengthening and evidence-based decision-making

Registration Fee
The full workshop fee is HK$15,000. We are now pleased to offer a 20% group discount for registrations of three or more participants, bringing the fee to HK$12,000 per person.
Participants (or their sponsoring organizations) are responsible for all other expenses, including travel, accommodation, health and accident insurance, and personal costs incurred during their stay in Hong Kong.
